How to Choose a Dental Assistant Program near Yates Center Kansas

Yates Center KS dental assistant assisting oral surgeonChoosing the right dental assistant college near Yates Center KS is an essential first step toward starting your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your choice, you must evaluate and compare your school options. There is far more to doing your due diligence than choosing the training with the least expensive tuition or enrolling in the college that is nearest to your home. There are other significant factors to take into account also, including the school’s accreditation and reputation. Your initial step is to decide which of the 2 specializations you are most interested in obtaining training for, which may be contingent on the amount of money and time that you are willing to commit. The most common dental assistant program usually takes about 1 year to finish for a certificate or diploma. On the other hand dental hygienists usually earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from 2 to 3 years to complete. Obviously with the longer training of a dental hygienist comes more expense. We will discuss all of these issues and additional questions that you need to be asking the dental assistant schools you are evaluating later in this article. But first, let’s explore the duties of both dental assistants and hygienists and the training options offered.

The Role of a Dental Assistant

Dental assistants are an integral part of any Yates Center KS dental practice and can carry out a multitude of functions. Their principal job description is to provide assistance to the admin staff and the dentists. In other words, to help keep the practice working successfully. Many dental assistants choose to specialize and obtain certification in a particular area, for instance pediatrics. However the majority of assistants perform any job that they are asked to fulfill, for example:

  • Scheduling and confirming appointments
  • Preparing patients for teeth treatments and cleanings
  • Sterilizing and preparing dental instruments
  • Clearing patients’ mouths with suction equipment
  • Giving instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Readying X-ray machines and processing X-rays
  • Purchasing office and dental supplies

Licensing and certification requirements for dental assistants differ by state, so consult with the Kansas dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants handling X-ray machines most likely will have to be certified and licensed. Most dental assistants who are either required or elect to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

The Job of Dental Hygienists

When contrasting the job of a dental hygienist to that of an assistant, the biggest difference is probably that the dental hygienist works more independently. As earlier discussed, the dental assistant works with and in support of the dentists and the practice. Hygienists, while also assisting the Yates Center KS practice, deal with the patients more on a one-to-one basis. They are frequently the initial person a patient encounters when called from the waiting area. They examine each patient’s teeth and gums and present their results to the dentists. They also may perform basic procedures. Depending on state law, a hygienist’s duties may include:

  • Removing plaque, tartar and stains
  • Administering fluoride treatments
  • Applying sealants and polishing teeth
  • Teaching patients about oral hygiene
  • Taking X-rays and developing film
  • Applying fillings and removing sutures

To qualify for licensing in almost all states, dental hygienists must graduate from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) accredited dental hygiene program. They must also pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination in addition to passing any state licensure exams. After they have completed these requirements they are considered fully licensed and may add the “RDH” designation to their names, standing for Registered Dental Hygienist.

Dental Assistant & Hygienist Training Options

The most frequent credential acquired is the certificate, which ordinarily takes about one year to finish. There are less Associate Degree programs available, and they provide a more extensive education, incorporating general subjects in addition to the dental assisting classes. Due to the additional responsibility in contrast to an assistant, dental hygienists employed in Yates Center KS dental offices are often required to have an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. These programs can take anywhere from two to as long as three years to complete and must be accredited by the CDA in virtually every state. They are also offered in Kansas community colleges and technical schools. Whether you are interested in training as a dental hygienist or assistant, there will be a clinical component to the training as well. A number of programs also sponsor internships with local dental practices or dentists.

Online Dental Assistant Classes

attending dental assistant school online in Yates Center KS Enrolling in an online dental assistant program can be a great option for receiving your education. Just remember that the classes will not be totally online, since there will be a practical portion to your training. But the balance of your classes will be available via your desktop computer in the comfort of your Yates Center KS home or anywhere else on your tablet or laptop. For those continuing to work while attending school, online dental classes make education a lot more obtainable. Many may even have lower tuition fees than their on-campus competitors. And added expenses for items like commuting, books and school supplies may be reduced also. The practical training can usually be completed at an area dental office or in an on-campus lab. With both the online and clinical training, everything needed to get the appropriate education is furnished. If you have the dedication for this mode of education, you might find that enrolling in an dental hygienist online program is the best choice for you.

Issues to Cover With Dental Assistant Schools

As we covered at the beginning of this article, many students start by checking out the cost and the location of the schools. Possibly they look for some online options as well. Even though these are significant initial points to consider, there are several additional questions that you need to ask of the Yates Center KS area colleges you are comparing in order to arrive at an informed decision. Toward that end, we have included a list of questions to assist you with your evaluation and ultimate selection of the right dental hygienist school for you.

Is the Dental Assistant College Accredited? There are a number of important reasons why you should only enroll in an accredited dental assistant school. If you are intending to become certified or licensed, then accreditation is a condition in almost all states. In order to take the Certified Dental Assistant examination, your dental school must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps ensure that the instruction you receive is comprehensive and of the highest quality. Employers in Yates Center KS often desire or require that job applicants are graduates of accredited programs. And last, if you are requesting financial aid or a student loan, usually they are not provided for non-accredited Kansas programs.

Is The Proper Dental Program Available? You can decide to train to become a dental assistant or a dental hygienist, just confirm that the Kansas school you select has the program that’s right for you. For the assistant program, the choices are to earn either a certificate or an Associate Degree. If you want to work as a hygienist, a large number of Yates Center KS dental practices require an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. More advanced degrees, although not prevalent, are offered. However, keep in mind that just because a college has an excellent reputation and accreditation does not mean each one of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited school may have a solid accredited dental hygienist program, but might have a weaker or non-accredited assistant program. So if you are solely interested in a dental assistant degree, clearly it would not be the best school for you.

Is Enough Practical Training Included? Practical or clinical training is an important component of any dental training program. This holds true for the online college options as well. Many dental schools have relationships with regional dental practices and clinics that provide practical training for their students. It’s not only important that the college you enroll in provides enough clinical hours but also provides them in the type of practice that you ultimately want to work in. As an example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, make sure that the Yates Center KS area  program you enroll in offers clinical rotation in a regional dental practice that specializes in dental services for children.

Are Internships Available? Verify if the dental programs you are looking at have internship programs. Internships are probably the most effective method to receive hands-on, practical experience in a professional Yates Center KS dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students create professional relationships in the local dentistry community. And they look good on resumes as well.

Is Job Placement Support Furnished? Many students that have graduated from dental assistant colleges need assistance landing their first job. Check if the schools you are researching have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Colleges with higher job placement rates probably have excellent reputations within the Yates Center KS dental community as well as extensive networks of contacts where they can place their students for employment or internships.

Are Classrooms Smaller? Ask the Yates Center KS area programs you are interested in how big on average their classrooms are. The smaller classes tend to offer a more intimate atmosphere for training where students have greater access to the instructors. Conversely, large classes often are impersonal and provide little one-on-one instruction. If feasible, find out if you can attend a few classes at the school that you are most interested in in order to witness first hand the amount of interaction between teachers and students before making a commitment.

What is the Overall Cost of the Program? Dental assistant training can vary in cost depending on the length of the program and the volume of practical training provided. Other factors, for example the reputations of the colleges and whether they are private or public also have an impact. But in addition to the tuition there are other significant expenses which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as commuting and textbooks as well as school equipment, materials and supplies. So when analyzing the cost of schools, don’t forget to add all of the costs related to your education. Most colleges have financial aid departments, so make sure to ask what is available as far as grants, loans and scholarships in Yates Center KS.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before selecting a dental college, you need to make sure that the assistant program furnishes classes that accommodate your schedule. This is especially true if you continue working while receiving your education and need to go to classes near your Yates Center KS home at nights or on weekends. And even if you choose an online college, you will still need to schedule your clinical training classes. Also, while making your inquiries, ask what the make-up procedure is if you should have to miss any classes because of illness, work or family issues.
