How to Choose a Dental Assistant Program near Ehrenberg Arizona

Ehrenberg AZ dental assistant assisting oral surgeonPicking the right dental assistant program near Ehrenberg AZ is an essential first step toward launching your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your selection, you need to evaluate and compare your school options. There is far more to completing your due diligence than selecting the program with the most affordable tuition or enrolling in the school that is closest to your home. There are other crucial factors to consider also, such as the school’s reputation and accreditation. Your first step is to decide which of the two specializations you are most interested in obtaining training for, which may depend on the amount of time and money that you are willing to invest. The most common dental assistant program usually takes about 12 months to complete for a diploma or certificate. Meanwhile dental hygienists usually earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from two to three years to accomplish. Naturally with the more extensive training of a dental hygienist comes more cost. We will talk about all of these factors and additional questions that you need to be asking the dental assistant schools you are assessing later in this article. But first, let’s review the duties of both dental assistants and hygienists and the training options available.

The Duties of a Dental Assistant

Dental assistants are an essential part of any Ehrenberg AZ dental practice and can perform a variety of tasks. Their main job description is to give support to the dentists and the administrative staff. In other words, to help keep the practice operating successfully. Many dental assistants choose to specialize and earn certification in a particular area, for example pediatrics. However the majority of assistants carry out any job that they are asked to fulfill, including:

  • Scheduling and confirming appointments
  • Prepping patients for teeth cleanings and treatments
  • Sterilizing and preparing dental instruments
  • Using suction equipment to clear patients’ mouths
  • Supplying instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Prepping X-ray machines and handling X-rays
  • Ordering office and dental supplies

Certification and licensing requirements for dental assistants differ by state, so consult with the Arizona dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants handling X-ray machines more than likely will need to be licensed and certified. Most dental assistants who are either required or opt to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

The Duties of a Dental Hygienist

When comparing the role of a dental assistant to that of a hygienist, the most significant difference is probably that the dental hygienist works more independently. As previously discussed, the dental assistant works with and in support of the practice and the dentists. Hygienists, while also assisting the Ehrenberg AZ practice, deal with the patients more on a one-to-one basis. They are usually the first person a patient sees when called from the waiting area. They examine every patient’s gums and teeth and present their results to the dentists. They may also carry out basic procedures. Based on state law, a hygienist’s responsibilities may include:

  • Removing stains, tartar and plaque
  • Applying fluoride treatments
  • Applying sealants and polishing teeth
  • Teaching patients about oral hygiene
  • Taking X-rays and developing film
  • Removing sutures and applying fillings

In order to be licensed in almost all states, dental hygienists must have graduated from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) accredited dental hygiene program. They also must pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination in addition to passing any state licensure exams. After they have completed these requirements they are deemed fully licensed and may add the “RDH” designation to their names, signifying Registered Dental Hygienist.

Dental Assistant & Hygienist Training Options

The most typical credential attained is the certificate, which generally takes about a year to finish. There are fewer Associate Degree programs offered, and they furnish a more comprehensive education, including general subjects in addition to the dental assistant courses. Due to the increased responsibility in contrast to an assistant, dental hygienists working in Ehrenberg AZ dental offices are often required to hold an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. These programs can take anywhere from 2 to as long as 3 years to complete and must be accredited by the CDA in nearly every state. They are also offered in Arizona trade schools and community colleges. Regardless of whether you are interested in training as a dental hygienist or assistant, there will be a clinical component to the training also. A number of programs also sponsor internships with local dental practices or dentists.

Online Dental Assistant Programs

attending dental assistant school online in Ehrenberg AZ Selecting an online dental assistant school might be a great alternative for receiving your training. Just remember that the classes will not be totally online, since there will be a clinical component to your training. But the rest of your classes will be provided by means of your personal computer in the comfort of your Ehrenberg AZ home or anywhere else on your laptop or tablet. For those working while attending school, online dental classes make education much more obtainable. Many may even offer lower tuition costs than their on-campus counterparts. And additional expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be lessened as well. The practical training can typically be performed at a community dental practice or in an on-campus lab. With both the online and clinical training, everything necessary to get the proper education is provided. If you have the discipline for this mode of education, you may find that attending an online dental hygienist school is the best option for you.

Issues to Ask Dental Assistant Colleges

As we discussed at the opening of this article, a number of potential students begin by checking out the location and the cost of the schools. Perhaps they look for several online options as well. Even though these may be important initial considerations, there are a few additional questions that you should ask of the Ehrenberg AZ area programs you are looking at in order to arrive at an informed decision. Toward that end, we have provided a list of questions to help you with your evaluation and ultimate selection of the best dental hygienist program for you.

Is the Dental Assistant Program Accredited? There are many good reasons why you should only choose an accredited dental assistant school. If you are intending to become certified or licensed, then accreditation is a condition in virtually all states. In order to take the Certified Dental Assistant examination, your dental program must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps ensure that the education you get is comprehensive and of the highest quality. Employers in Ehrenberg AZ frequently prefer or require that new hires are graduates of accredited colleges. And finally, if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, usually they are not obtainable for non-accredited Arizona programs.

Is The Right Dental Program Offered? You can choose to train to become a dental assistant or a dental hygienist, just make sure that the Arizona school you select offers the program that’s right for you. For the assistant program, the choices are to earn either a certificate or an Associate Degree. In order to have a career as a hygienist, many Ehrenberg AZ dental practices require an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. More advanced degrees, although not prevalent, are available. However, bear in mind that even if a school has an excellent reputation and accreditation does not mean all of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited school may have a strong accredited dental hygienist program, but might have a weaker or non-accredited assistant program. So if you are primarily interested in a dental assistant degree, naturally it would not be the right college for you.

Is Plenty of Practical Training Included? Clinical or practical training is a necessary part of every dental training program. This holds true for the online college options as well. A number of dental schools have relationships with local dental practices and clinics that provide practical training for their students. It’s not only essential that the college you select offers enough clinical hours but also provides them in the kind of practice that you subsequently want to work in. For example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, make sure that the Ehrenberg AZ area  program you select offers clinical rotation in a regional dental practice that focuses on dental services for children.

Is There an Internship Program? Find out if the dental schools you are evaluating have an internship program. Internships are undoubtedly the best means to get hands-on, practical experience in a professional Ehrenberg AZ dental practice. They help students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students build working relationships in the professional dental community. And they are attractive on resumes also.

Is Job Placement Assistance Furnished? Many students that have graduated from dental assistant schools need help obtaining their first job. Check if the programs you are considering have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Programs with higher job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the Ehrenberg AZ dental community as well as extensive networks of contacts where they can refer their students for employment or internships.

Are the Classes Small? Ask the Ehrenberg AZ area programs you are evaluating how big on average their classrooms are. The smaller classes generally offer a more personal atmosphere for learning where students have greater access to the teachers. On the other hand, large classes tend to be impersonal and offer little one-on-one instruction. If feasible, ask if you can monitor a few classes at the college that you are leaning toward in order to experience first hand the degree of interaction between instructors and students before enrolling.

What is the Total Cost of the Program? Dental assistant training can differ in cost depending on the duration of the program and the amount of practical training provided. Other factors, such as the reputations of the colleges and if they are private or public also come into play. But in addition to the tuition there are other substantial expenses which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as textbooks and commuting as well as school materials, equipment and supplies. So when comparing the cost of schools, don’t forget to add all of the costs related to your education. The majority of colleges have financial aid offices, so make sure to find out what is offered as far as grants, loans and scholarships in Ehrenberg AZ.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before enrolling in a dental school, you need to make sure that the assistant program provides classes that suit your schedule. This is particularly true if you will be working while getting your education and need to attend classes near your Ehrenberg AZ home at nights or on weekends. And even if you select an online school, you will still need to schedule your clinical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up protocol is if you should have to miss any classes due to illness, work or family responsibilities.

Tell Me About Ehrenberg Arizona

Ehrenberg, Arizona

Ehrenberg, also historically spelled "Ehrenburg" is a census-designated place (CDP) in La Paz County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,470 at the 2010 census.[3] Ehrenberg is named for its founder, Herman Ehrenberg.[4]

Ehrenberg is located on the Colorado River, which forms the border with Riverside County, California, near the city of Blythe. It is situated close to Interstate 10, at the southern end of Parker Valley and next to the Palo Verde Valley.

In 1863, German mining engineer Herman Ehrenberg was hired to survey a new townsite along the Colorado River, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) from La Paz, Arizona. The town, named Mineral City, began to grow in 1866, after a new landing was established there, supported by the steamboat captains of the George A. Johnson Company. Mineral City now attracted miners and many businessmen away from La Paz and by September 20, 1869 had grown large enough to win a post office.[5] The same year it was renamed Ehrenberg.[6]:96

Around the start of the 20th century, railroads began to bypass the river as the major means of transporting goods. The town's population declined, and it lost its post office on December 31, 1913.[7]
